Streets & Transportation
The Greensboro Department of Transportation (GDOT) provides transportation services including traffic signals, traffic signs and pavement markings, parking, traffic studies, street lighting, transportation systems planning, and sidewalk and bicycle facility requests. GDOT provides these services only on streets that have been designated for public use. Private streets and drives are the responsibility of a homeowner’s association or individual property owners. The City is not required to install curbs and gutters on streets in annexed areas. GDOT may determine that some streets should be improved on the basis of public necessity. If the street improvement involves widening or paving a street, then curbs and gutters will likely be installed. Residents may also petition the City for curbs and gutters on their street. The cost is $23 per front foot. In either situation, the property owner pays this assessment fee.
Sidewalks do not have to be installed upon annexation. There are three ways that sidewalks may be obtained.
- As part of roadway improvement projects
- A determination by the City that certain streets should have sidewalks, or
- By petition.
To request sidewalks in your area, call GDOT for a petition form. There is currently no assessment fee for sidewalks.
GDOT offers a number of other services to residents, including the Neighborhood Speed Watch and Pace Car programs. These free programs allow residents to take an active role in slowing traffic to make City streets safer.
The Field Operations Department provides storm drainage maintenance, street repair and cleaning, sidewalk repair and maintenance on public streets, and removal of loose leaves, snow and ice.
