GDOT Employee Wins State Toastmasters’ Competition
Kevin Johnson, a member of the City of Greensboro Talk of Town Toastmasters club, won first place at the Toastmasters Annual District Conference, a statewide public speaking competition held in Charlotte, Saturday, May 5. Johnson will represent North Carolina at the Toastmasters International Speech Contest semi-finals in Chicago in August.
To get to the state competition, Johnson competed in both local and regional contests. He is a traffic signal maintenance supervisor for the Greensboro Department of Transportation. Talk of the Town is a Toastmasters club for City employees that formed in 2017. It’s one of 200 Toastmasters clubs in North Carolina.
“The City of Greensboro chartered a new club in October to help employees learn how to speak confidently in public and gain leadership skills in the process. I joined the moment I saw the opportunity and wow – I met some great people within the city by doing so. It is a super supportive group lead by Steve Drew, our president, and Rodney Roberts, our VP, that go above and beyond to assist employees like myself and so many others to learn the skills needed for presenting ideas on a public platform,” Johnson said.
