Parks and Recreation Celebrates Inclusive Boat Launch July 14
Greensboro's Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a free ribbon-cutting celebration for the new inclusive kayak and canoe launch on July 14, from 10 am to noon, at Lake Higgins, 4235 Hamburg Mill Rd., Summerfield. This launch allows people of any ability to enter a boat from a stable platform or transfer from a wheelchair into a boat at Lake Higgins.
At the ribbon-cutting event, staff is available to help individuals learn how to use the new launch. This event will include a scavenger hunt on the lake, music, and kayaking. Kona Ice will be on site to provide refreshments.
The boat launch was built with a $37,965 grant from the Duke Energy Water Resources Fund. The idea was spurred by participants with disabilities who attended an adaptive recreation event at Lake Higgins several years ago. They were interested in kayaking independently and this launch provides the access that they need. Greensboro Parks and Recreation staff applied for the grant through Duke Energy and is proud to offer this service to people of all abilities in the community.
