Post Date:01/07/2019 1:51 PM

The Downtown Greenway, a collaborative economic development project between the City of Greensboro and Action Greensboro, has planned a ribbon cutting for the completed section of the Downtown Greenway from Eugene to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard along Bragg Street. The event will be held on Monday, January 21 from 2-3 pm at the corner of Bragg Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard following the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. Parking is available at the Union Square Campus, 124 E. Gate City Blvd.

Artist Vandorn Hinnant, from Durham, will be in his hometown of Greensboro for the celebration. Through a series of neighborhood public meetings and input from residents, Vandorn created two pieces of public art that represent the history of the Ole Asheboro neighborhood. The pieces of art will be located at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Bragg Street and the corner of Arlington and Bragg Street.

In addition, the Martin Luther King Jr. bust that was designed and fabricated by artist Wilbur Mapp will be dedicated in its new location at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Bragg Street. The bust was refurbished by local artist Jim Gallucci.

The program will begin at 2:15 pm with remarks from Mayor Nancy Vaughan, City Council members and the artists. Following the program, the public will be able to explore the newly completed section of the Downtown Geenway by foot, on Limebikes or on a rickshaw provided by Greensboro Rickshaw Company. Snacks and hot chocolate will be provided by Dames Chicken and Waffles.

The Downtown Greenway is a planned four-mile, urban, paved trail that will encircle downtown Greensboro. Upon completion, full features will include landscaping and lighting, benches, bicycle racks, drinking fountains, trash and recycling receptacles, and public art commissions.
