City’s First Outdoor Pickleball Courts Open May 23
Residents are invited to Parks and Recreation’s grand opening celebration for the City’s first outdoor pickleball complex at 10 am, Thursday, May 23, at Smith Community Park, 2401 Fairview St.
Immediately following the celebration, the courts will be available for open play and there will be a free Beginner’s Pickleball Clinic. To participate in the clinic, register online.
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing leisure activities in the country. The USA Pickleball Association has had a 650 percent increase in membership since 2013.
“During our Plan2Play master plan development, we heard from many residents who wanted more opportunities to play pickleball year-round. This project meets those needs, and fulfills our Plan2Play goal of enhancing our existing facilities,” said Shawna Tillery, Parks and Recreation Planning and Project Development division manager.
The pickleball courts and a new social space with a gazebo are the first phase of redevelopment in the recently-approved Smith Community Park Master Plan. This project was made possible through a collaboration with the GROWTH Network, UNCG, and the Junior League of Greensboro, which provided an $8,000 community impact grant.
