Greensboro Seeks Community Input for LEED Sustainability Project

Post Date:07/03/2019 1:30 PM

The City of Greensboro’s LEED for Cities project takes center stage at the Greensboro Community Sustainability Council’s next meeting. The meeting is from 4-6 pm on Monday, July 8 in the Greensboro Central Library’s Nussbaum Room, 219 N. Church St. The agenda is focused on providing an update to community stakeholders regarding the project and offering an initial opportunity for individuals and groups to participate.

“The goal of our City Council is for Greensboro to become a leading city for sustainable efforts,” said Assistant City Manager Kim Sowell. “Staff is working hard right now collecting data for our application for certification in late August. We want to engage the community with this project. We want the community to be engaged and participating with us to set goals, action plans and recommendations.”

In May, Greensboro was selected as one of 15 US cities to receive a grant to participate in the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED for Cities and Communities Program.

Participating in the LEED for Cities program helps Greensboro achieve the City Council’s intention to become a leading city in resilience, sustainability and energy independence, and to meet or exceed the goals of Governor Roy Cooper’s Executive Order Number 80, NC’s commitment to address climate change and transition to clean, renewable energy. Becoming LEED-certified will help the City become more fiscally sustainable and better serve the community. LEED for Cities will also provide access to valuable tools for implementing Greensboro’s new Comprehensive Plan.

Parking for the meeting is available in the Church Street Parking Deck, 215 N. Church St., next to the library.
