Greensboro Residents Invited to Be Part of “No Straw November”

Post Date:10/21/2019 9:03 AM

Greensboro residents are invited to join with the City and be part of next month’s “No Straw November” campaign. “No Straw November” is a nationwide effort to reduce the use of plastic straws and other single-use plastics, like cups, lids and bags. These items can’t be recycled due to their small size and shape, and often end up polluting streams and waterways.

“No Straw November” begins with a kickoff event 6-8 pm Friday, November 1, at the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie St. A free screening of the documentary “STRAWS” will be shown, and there will be face painting, local sustainable vendors, music, and crafts. Residents and organizations are invited to pledge to reduce their use of plastic straws online. Restaurants and businesses are encouraged to provide straws only on request and to provide reusable or natural alternatives to plastic straws. Residents are asked to refuse plastic straws when they don’t want them.

Single-use plastic never really goes away, it just breaks down into small pieces called microplastics. Increasingly microplastics are being found in drinking water and in aquatic animals, with potentially dangerous human and environmental health impacts.

To take the pledge or for more information, visit the No Straw November web page.
