The six-month arts residency in Kings Forest, led by Sunny Gravely-Foushee, featured community engagement and art in the park activities, all  culminating in visual art projects at Kings Park. Art is displayed on the picnic table and two benches, the basketball court (mural), and sidewalks circling the park. The artist received $22,500 to support residency activities.

“This program has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with neighbors and make art together in this community,” Gravely said. “The artist team has been meeting at least monthly with people who live in the neighborhood to plan and promote paint in the park events and help create the designs for all of the artwork. We talked with and polled community members to determine who they wanted to honor in the sidewalk art.”

About the Artist 

Sunny Gravely-Foushee earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Howard University and Master’s in Art Education from Pratt Institute. She is a visual artist who has worked on several murals in Greensboro, including the “Say it Loud Mural” street mural, and exhibited at the African American Atelier. She is currently executive director of TAB Arts Center Non-Profit and co-owner of The Artist Bloc.

Neighborhood Arts supports artists and residents as co-leaders to connect communities with creativity. The program brings creative experiences close to home through arts activities and beautification projects that respond to neighborhood priorities. The program focuses on the five communities of the Housing GSO Plan: Dudley Heights, Glenwood, Kings Forest, Mill District, and Random Woods. The neighborhoods chosen for the program were identified for reinvestment in that plan.
