Sage Chioma Brings Healing through Expressive Arts in Residency at the Hyers

Creative Greensboro will present “Sweet Medicine: An Elixir of Hope and Healing” performed by Sage Chioma, as part of their Residency at the Hyers from September 14 through October 12.

The Residency will include an Expressive Arts Workshop Series and culminate with performances October 3-4 and 10-11, at 7:30 pm. All events will take place at the Stephen D. Hyers Theatre in the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie St.

About Sweet Medicine: An Elixir of Hope and Healing”

The one-woman show performed by Sage Chioma, is a powerful artistic work combining poetry, storytelling, movement, and visual imagery to create a deeply transformative experience. As a wise woman elder with over three decades of long-term recovery, Sage Chioma brings a unique depth of insight and compassion to her work. Drawing from her poetry book "Earth is a Mother's Hood" and inspired by the concept of the wounded healer and the hero's journey, Sage Chioma weaves a narrative that reflects resilience, recovery, and collective healing.

Workshop Series for "Sweet Medicine: An Elixir of Hope and Healing"

This series of workshops will offer a transformative journey through self-healing and empowerment, blending deep reflection and creative arts. Each week focuses on a different theme, guiding participants to explore, understand, and reframe their personal and collective experiences as we lift up the archetype of the wounded healer in each of us. These workshops are free, with a suggested donation of $15. Registration is required.

Woundology 101 - The Wound is Where the Light Enters 

September 15, 6:30-8 pm
Inspired by Rumi’s profound words, this workshop introduces participants to the concept of "woundology," exploring how the places of deepest pain can become sources of illumination. Through meditative grounding, guided expressive arts exercises in poetry and movement, participants will be encouraged to release their wounds as a source of identity but honor and embrace their woundedness both individually and collectively as entry points for personal growth and collective healing.

Transcendence - Transforming Wounds into Wisdom 
September 22, 6:30-8 pm 

This workshop focuses on resilience and the power of reframing. Participants will play with words and the power of intention to transform their narratives, viewing past wounds as a source of wisdom and strength. Through storytelling and reflective writing, they will practice reclaiming their power by reframing their stories and turn personal pain into powerful narratives that fuel resilience and self-discovery.

Resilient Souls - Shaping Destiny through Story and Folklore

September 29, 6:30-8 pm 
In this session, participants will explore how BIPOC communities have historically used storytelling and folklore to define themselves, shape their destinies, and transcend challenges. Through group discussions and creative activities, participants will reconnect with cultural stories and personal legacies, understanding the power of narrative as a tool for both survival and self-determination.

Kuumba (Creativity) - Igniting the Divine Spark

October 6, 6:30-8 pm 

In this culminating workshop, inspired by the Swahili principle of Kuumba (creativity), participants will awaken their creative power as a reflection of their inner brilliance and resilience. This session celebrates the boundless creativity of the African Diaspora and its transformative influence on cultures worldwide. Through engaging expressive arts-based exercises, participants will be guided to express their unique creative spark and connect with the vibrant spirit of community and culture. Together, they will explore creative expression as a powerful force for healing, unity, and self-discovery.

About Sage Chioma

Chioma is a poet, playwright, actor, and practitioner of arts for healing whose work

weaves together creative expression, social justice, and public health. She holds a degree in social justice and policy studies from Guilford College, and a graduate degree in public health specializing in social and behavioral sciences. Chioma is also a certified substance use counselor and certified prevention specialist in North Carolina, as well as a trained facilitator of emotional emancipation circles and restorative healing circles. She is the author of “Earth is a Mother’s Hood,” a poetry collection celebrating Gaia and the feminine divine, as well as the plays “Embracing the Miracle” and “Tapestry.” Through her work, Chioma offers participants a transformative journey toward hope, healing, and resilience.
