Gillespie Golf Course to Celebrate “Greensboro Six” December 7

Post Date:12/02/2025 3:15 PM

The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department will tee-off a yearlong celebration of the “Greensboro Six” at Gillespie Golf Course (GGC) beginning Sunday, December 7.

Festivities will begin at 1:30 p.m. at GGC, 306 E. Florida St., with a ceremonial tee shot by six individuals to mark the 70th anniversary of the “Greensboro Six” – a title given to the six Black men (Dr. George Simkins Jr., Phillip Cook, Elijah Herring, Samual Murray, Joseph Sturdivant, and Leon Wolfe) – whose actions that day in 1955 eventually led to the integration of the then whites-only GGC.

Then at 2 p.m., a special screening of a short film documenting the “Greensboro Six” story and the 2024 mural installation will be presented in the First Tee building onsite at the course. Surviving family members of the "Greensboro Six" – including Chris Simkins (son of George "Doc" Simkins Jr.) – will be on hand to greet attendees and share more about the men behind the legacy.

Additionally, in honor of that day, GGC will offer $.75 green fees (cart fees additional) for anyone that would like to play on Sunday. To reserve your tee time call the golf shop at 336-373-5850.
