The City of Greensboro has evacuated the multifamily property at 830 W. Market St., due to multiple building and fire code violations.
Out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of public safety, the housing complex is being closed and more than 180 residents are being relocated.
Today, City inspectors detected burned out electrical wiring and faulty breakers. Other noted repairs previously done at the facility do not meet City code compliance, posing a fire hazard. Examples range from altering fire walls to performing electrical and HVAC work without permits.
The property owner recently contacted an electrician to repair the problems, but upon inspection the company declined to do the work, citing the property was a liability and required a complete overhaul.
A tenant contacted the City to report power has been sporadic, going on and off with people getting stuck in elevators. Most report being without electricity for six days. Several tenants left on their own in search of other housing.
Representatives from the Greensboro Fire, Police and Community Safety departments along with UNCG, NC A&T State University, and Greensboro College are on site working to provide resources and alternative housing for the remaining 10 displaced residents.
The City is maintaining open communication with tenants, documenting conditions, and ensuring all actions are consistent with applicable code requirements and due process.
