The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department will host a number of events throughout the month of January starting on Thursday, January 1, 2026, with its New Year’s Day Hike.
The following are highlights of the upcoming month’s offerings:
New Year’s Day Hike
Thursday, January 1 | noon to 4 pm | Laurel Bluff Trail, 5960 Lake Brandt Rd.
Whether your New Year’s Resolution is to get healthier or you just want to start the year off by being in the outdoors, this is the perfect program for you. This trail is suitable for all skill levels. Registration required.
26 for '26 Winter Workout Challenge
January 1-31
Welcome the New Year with 26 miles, as the Parks and Recreation Department encourages locals to walk, run, bike, or paddle 26-miles throughout the month of January. Everyone who completes the challenge will be entered to win a Parks and Recreation prize pack worth more than $200. Registration required.
Build Your Own Bird Feeder
Tuesday, January 6 | 5:30-6:30 pm | Gateway Gardens, 2800 E. Gate City Blvd.
This winter join Parks and Recreation at Gateway Gardens to assemble bird feeders and learn about local bird populations, what they like to eat, and how the seasons affect them. Registration required.
Fresh + Foodie Series: Make and Take Trail Mix

Snack smart with Parks and Recreation at Fresh + Foodie Series: Make & Take Trail Mix at Deep Roots Market. Mix, match, and create your perfect on-the-go blend of tasty, nutritious goodies.
Winter Wanderings
January 17, February 14, and March 14 | noon to 2 pm | Locations vary
Join Parks and Recreation for this hiking series that will take place each month from January through March. The first hike takes place Saturday, January 17, at the Nathaniel Greene Trailhead (4463 Old Battleground Rd.). The second hike will take place on Saturday, February 14, at Bill Craft Trail, and participants will meet in the parking lot at 383 Plainfield Rd. The last hike will take place on Saturday, March 14, at the Laurel Bluff Trail, 5960 Lake Brandt Rd. All hikes will be approximately three miles.
Teen Skate Day
Monday, January 26 | 1-3 pm | Craft Recreation Center, 3911 Yanceyville St.
This out of school event invites teens to come skate and enjoy hang out with peers while enjoying refreshments. For ages 12-17.
Windowsill Herb Garden
Tuesday, January 27 | 5:30-6:30 pm | Peeler Recreation Center, 1300 Sykes Ave.
Start your winter windowsill herb garden with the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. The department will provide the knowledge and materials to start a culinary focused garden of herbs that can be grown by a sunny window. Cost is $10. Registration required.
