The City of Greensboro will activate its full emergency snow and ice response plan at 11 pm on Saturday, January 17, in advance of the National Weather Service’s forecast of frozen precipitation during the day Sunday.
The City’s winter weather preparations began at 4 am today and should be completed by 3 pm. The measures include pre-treating elevated bridges and overpasses, 531 miles of roadway, City facilities, and crosswalks and accessibility ramps in the Central Business District. In addition, crews are mounting select City trucks with snow-removal equipment and identifying construction road plates along snow-removal routes.
Beginning Saturday night, select City staff from the Transportation, Parks & Recreation, Water Resources, and Solid Waste & Recycling departments will begin 24-hour operations and work toward the following service-level targets:
- clearing 90 percent of all Priority 1 routes (1,180 miles of major thoroughfares, arterials, and public safety resources) within 36 hours of the end of the weather event
- clearing 75 percent of Priority 2 routes (524 miles of minor thoroughfares, bus routes, and residential collectors) within 48 hours of the end of the weather event
- clearing 75 percent of Priority 3 routes (724 miles of residential collectors and neighborhood streets) within 72 hours of the end of the weather event
