City snow removal crews have made significant progress following an extended winter weather event, working around the clock for the past 10 days to improve roadway conditions across Greensboro. Continued sunny conditions and above-freezing temperatures are helping crews advance snow removal efforts and further improve road conditions citywide.
All 1,180 miles of Priority 1 roads, which include major arterials and emergency routes, have been cleared. Overnight, Monday, February 2 into Tuesday, February 3, crews again plowed and treated Priority 2 roads, with an estimated 68% now cleared, representing approximately 356 miles of Priority 2 roadways. Some shaded areas along Priority 2 routes continue to have hard-packed icy spots. These locations have been treated and will receive additional plowing today as temperatures remain above freezing.
Crews began plowing Priority 3 residential streets today, Tuesday, February 3, and will continue plowing efforts into tonight. Due to record-high snowfall totals, plows must make multiple passes on many streets to achieve bare pavement.
Approximately 95% of the downtown area has been cleared of snow and ice.
All warming stations and public safety facilities have also been fully cleared of snow and ice.
The City maintains approximately 2,500 miles of roadway. A total of 41 snow removal trucks are deployed across four quadrants, northwest (10 trucks), northeast (nine trucks), southwest (11 trucks), and southeast (11 trucks), supported by smaller vehicles used for clearing intersections and turning lanes once primary service levels are met. Four motor graders are selectively deployed to address particularly difficult icy sections as they are identified.
Over the 10-day response period, City staff have collectively invested an estimated 20,000 hours in snow removal operations. Crews have also used approximately 4,500 tons of salt. Salt supplies have been proactively replenished throughout the week.
Additional updates will be provided on the City’s social media channels and the City’s website, www.greensboro-nc.gov as conditions continue to improve.
