As Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson prepares to retire at the end of this month, the City of Greensboro will appoint Assistant Chief Chris Schultheis to serve as Interim Chief of Police, effective Friday, February 27.
“I am honored to serve in this role until the City names its next Chief of Police,” said Schultheis, who joined the department in 1998 as a member of the 74th Police Academy.
Here’s his career information at a glance:
- 2004 – Promoted to rank of Corporal
- 2008 – Promoted to rank of Sergeant, serving in a variety of assignments, including the development and implementation of GPD’s Body Worn Camera program
- 2014 – Promoted to rank of Lieutenant, serving in assignments including Watch Commander, Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, and Training Division
- 2020 – Promoted to rank of Captain, serving in assignments including Special Operations Division, Training Division, and Vice and Narcotics Division
- 2024 – Promoted to rank of Assistant Chief, serving as Bureau Commander of the Management Bureau
In addition, Schultheis has served as a General Instructor since 2004, serving as a Lead Instructor in the Police Academy from 2006 until 2025. He received an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate in 2014, the Meritorious Conduct Bar in 2014, and the Lifesaving Medal in 2004.
