City of Greensboro employees stand ready for the potential for dangerous storms on Monday in central North Carolina and recommend residents and businesses do likewise.
A tornado watch is in effect for Guilford County until 2 pm Monday. As of 5:58 am Monday, the National Weather Service in Raleigh reports central North Carolina could experience damaging wind gusts, some in excess of 74 mph. There is a high probability the area will receive several tornado warnings as the weather system passes.
Residents and businesses should stay weather aware and sign up for real-time weather alerts through the Guilford Emergency Alert, Notification, and Information (GEANI) System at www.readyguilford.org. Power outages should be reported to Duke Energy through the Duke Energy website or mobile app, texting OUT to 57801, or calling 1-800-759-3766.
The City’s Right-of-Way Maintenance Division employees have inspected and prepared chainsaws, trucks, and other necessary equipment. Crews are prepared to respond on Monday and continue working throughout the week, depending on the storm's impact. In the event of a significant straight-line wind event, crews will initially remove trees and debris from travel lanes. Once travel lanes are cleared, City staff will return to remove debris where needed.
In addition, the City’s Transportation Department has backup generators in place at high-priority locations in case of signal outages, and the Water Resources Department’s Stormwater Division is ready to respond to flooding conditions as needed. The Greensboro Police Department has activated its Travel Safety Unit.
City staff is also working with Duke Power crews as they address electrical hazards and restore service. This coordination requires patience from everyone as areas are cleared and made safe before work begins.
Stay tuned to the City website and official social media channels for updates.
