Community Meeting Focuses on Preserving African American Civil Rights History in Greensboro

Post Date:05/07/2026 9:30 AM

The City of Greensboro continues its efforts to preserve and highlight local Civil Rights history through its $75,000 African American Civil Rights grant project. Residents may receive project updates and learn more about historic preservation tools at an upcoming community meeting from 6-8 pm on Thursday, May 28, in the fellowship hall of Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 901 E. Friendly Ave.

Funded through the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation fund, this initiative supports the documentation of stories and places connected to Greensboro’s role in the Civil Rights Movement. As part of this process, nominations are being prepared for two historically significant sites, Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and Gillespie Golf Course, for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

City and County staff and commissioners will provide an update on the nomination status of these properties and share information on historic preservation resources and programs including:

  • Greensboro and National Register Historic Districts

  • Guilford County Landmark Program

  • State and Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credits

  • Heritage Community Program

Previous grant-funded studies boast accomplishments such as updating the Downtown Greensboro National Register Historic District to include mid-twentieth century architecture and Civil Rights history, surveying historic buildings in east and southeast Greensboro, and listing South Benbow Road Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places. Learn more about past studies here.
