Greensboro Fire Department to Rededicate Historic Central Station During Centennial Celebration

Post Date:05/11/2026 12:00 PM

The Greensboro Fire Department will commemorate a century of professional fire service with the rededication of the historic Old Central Fire Station on Saturday, May 16, 100 years after the station’s original dedication in 1926.

The media is invited to attend this centennial celebration, which will take place from 11 am to 2 pm at 318 N. Greene St. The event will honor the legacy, service, and sacrifice of the generations of firefighters who have served the City of Greensboro over the past 100 years.

A complimentary hot dog lunch and fellowship gathering, for current firefighters and retirees, will begin at 11 am, followed by the official rededication ceremony at 1 pm.

The Greensboro Fire Department would like to thank Riding High Harley-Davidson for their financial support of this event. Special thanks are also extended to the Marriott Downtown for providing the opportunity to host this celebration and to US Foods for generously providing the food for today’s event.

In addition to the ceremony, guests will have the opportunity to explore several historical displays celebrating the department’s rich heritage, including:

  • The department’s 1924 American LaFrance fire apparatus
  • A recently acquired 1904 American LaFrance horse-drawn steamer owned by Dean Green
  • A curated photo exhibit showcasing historical images and daily life at Central Station throughout the decades

“This event is more than a ceremony, it is a tribute to the generations of firefighters whose courage, dedication, and service helped shape the Greensboro Fire Department into what it is today,” said Greensboro Fire Chief Jim Robinson. ”As we celebrate 100 years as a professional fire department, we are proud to preserve and honor the history of Central Station and the men and women who served there.”

The Greensboro Fire Department officially became a paid fire department in 1926, marking the beginning of a new era of organized fire protection and emergency response for the city. The rededication ceremony serves as both a reflection on the department’s historic past and a celebration of its continued commitment to serving the Greensboro community.
