Beginning Saturday, June 6, the City of Greensboro is opening a weekend cooling center at the Interactive Resource Center (IRC), 407 E. Washington St. The weekend cooling center will operate from 11 am to 5 pm every Saturday and Sunday from June through the end of August.
Weekday Cooling Stations Operating in Greensboro this Summer
- IRC, 9 am to 5 pm, Monday – Friday
- Glenwood Together, 1310 Glenwood Ave., noon to 5 pm, Tuesday – Thursday
Orange Flag Activation
As part of the Guilford County Continuum of Care (Guilford CoC*), the Greensboro Community Safety Department (CSD) will activate an Orange Flag on days when the forecasted daytime temperatures reach 90 degrees or higher, and overnight temperatures do not fall below 70 degrees. During Orange Flag activation, CSD staff will operate an overnight cooling center will from 7 pm to 7 am at the IRC (please confirm location on the latest Orange Flag activation notice for the most up-to-date information).
Hydration Station at Police Headquarters
During the summer, people can stop by the Greensboro Police Headquarters, 100 E. Police Plaza, from 8 am to 5 pm (except holidays), Monday to Friday, to get a free bottle of water from the mini fridge in the lobby.
Please note the daytime cooling stations and the hydration station operate independently of the Orange Flag status during the summer.
The City’s CSD takes a holistic, collaborative approach to improving Greensboro’s public safety through community-centered prevention initiatives, crisis intervention services to help de-escalate violence, and long-term, intensive case management for individuals whose issues—such as mental health, substance use, and homelessness— have put them in frequent contact with law enforcement.
