Developed and financed by the City of Greensboro, the Doorway Project is a temporary shelter community of pallet homes that not only provides shelter but also case management services to help homeless individuals find permanent housing.

The History of the Doorway Project

The Doorway Project was launched in December 2022 to provide temporary housing to individuals experiencing homelessness during the late fall and winter seasons. The program began with 30 pallet shelters, which each house two people, at a temporary site in Pomona Park. In 2022, two RV sleeping trailers were added to accommodate more people.

In 2025, the Doorway Project was extended to the spring and summer months for the first time. The 30 pallet homes were relocated to the former Regency Inn site.  This expansion of the Doorway Project ensures the needs of the unhoused do not go unmet when the weather gets warmer. The relocation is temporary and will not affect the City’s long-term plans for redeveloping the former Regency Inn site.

The Project continues to draw attention from other North Carolina municipalities as the state's first temporary shelter community.

How It Works

The City provides planning, funding, and oversight of the Doorway Project and contracts onsite services, such as case management administered by the Interactive Resource Center (IRC). The IRC manages the application process for the program. Applications must be completed in person at the IRC, 407 E Washington St.

FYI
According to a 2022 study by the National Coalition for the Homeless, there's a profound need across the country for a wide range of models and environments to provide meaningful interim housing options for people. Privacy, temperature control, locked doors, case management support, a sense of community, and safety are primary concerns.
