About our City Ensembles
Creative Greensboro is proud to continue the City’s decades-long tradition of supporting volunteer community music ensembles that give musicians of all skill levels an opportunity to make music together. Through free concert performances, these ensembles and the members who play within them serve as creative ambassadors to Greensboro. Spring registration opens in January for Philharmonia and Big Band, and in February for Concert Band and Choral Society.
All rehearsals take place in the Greensboro Cultural Center.
Greensboro Concert Band, Mondays 7-9 pm
Kiyoshi Carter, Conductor
individuals with previous band experience are invited to participate. The size of the band is capped at 115 musicians due to performance space limitations. The group rehearses from September through December and February through June, and small ensemble opportunities may also be available.
Choral Society of Greensboro, Tuesdays 7-9 pm
Jon Brotherton, Conductor
Singers of all abilities are invited to learn and perform repertoire ranging from symphonic choral works to traditional and contemporary choral literature. The group rehearses from September through December and February through June.
Philharmonia of Greensboro, Wednesdays 7-9 pm
Peter Perret, Conductor
Musicians with previous intermediate-to-advanced orchestral experience are invited to participate. Brass players must be able to read multiple clefs and have the ability to transpose. The first rehearsal will be an opportunity for new members to determine if Philharmonia is a good fit. The group rehearses from September through November and January through June.
Greensboro Big Band, Thursdays 7-8:30 pm
John Henry, Conductor
Musicians with intermediate-to-advanced experience playing swing-style jazz music are invited to participate under the direction of Dr. John Henry. Due to big band instrumentation, the number of musicians needed for performances is limited. Musicians will be assessed at the first couple of rehearsals to determine if they can best be utilized as a "regular" or an "alternate". Both regulars and alternates are expected to attend rehearsals, but only regulars will be called for concerts unless an alternate is needed. Alternates will not pay a participation fee. The group rehearses from September through November and January through June.
