The Lead-Safe Housing GSO Program is designed to maximize the prevention of lead poisoning of children under the age of six by identifying and removing or controlling lead-based paint hazards in qualifying privately owned rentals or owner-occupied housing. 

The Lead-Safe Greensboro program also offers free home lead testing.

The program is designed to assist owners of single- and multi-family dwellings and rental properties.

How to Apply 

To apply for the Lead-Safe program, you have three options:

  • Complete the application on the City of Greensboro Housing & Neighborhood Development online portal and follow instructions below. 
    • The application system is through the Neighborly software. If you already have an account, please log in. If you do not, you must create an account using your email.
    • Please select "Start Application" next to "Lead Safe Program." and provide the name of the applicant.

OR

  • Print out an application, fill it out, and submit it by mail or in person.

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • IRS tax forms (prior year 1040/1040EZ tax forms)
  • Paystubs for the most recent two months
  • Unemployment payments received
  • Current year Social Security earnings or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) statement
  • Disability or worker's compensation
  • Child support or alimony received
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and/or food stamp payments
  • Other annuity or retirement income statements (most recent)
  • Bank statements for the most recent two months showing all transactions
  • Homeowner's insurance (*homeowners only, rental units not required)

The City of Greensboro has no control over and makes no warranties regarding activities the landlord, management, residents, or others may have taken since testing that might have disturbed the lead-based paint and/or concerning normal deterioration that might have rendered the unit lead-contaminated since the test date.
