Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) organizes outreach events, reviews policies, and makes recommendations to the City Council for actions necessary to improve the quality of life for women in Greensboro. Learn more about applying to boards and commissions.

In March 2023, the commission released its 2022 Women of Greensboro Report, which provides information and analysis gathered from a survey of more than 1,100 female residents.

The CSW oversees the Ruth Wicker Tribute to Women, an interactive exhibit at the Barber Park Event Center that honors the contributions and achievements of Greensboro women.

Starleana Green, Mayor Nancy Vaughan, Julia Walker, and Rachel Wilson were inducted to the Tribute to Women on August 26, 2025, at the Barber Park Event Center. The induction was part of a luncheon to commemorate Women's Equality Day. Click here for a video recap of the program.

All meetings are open to the public and focus area volunteers are always welcome.

Residents, housing partners, and community leaders are invited to the City of Greensboro Human Rights Department’s Fair Housing Month Luncheon at noon on Wednesday, April 15, in the Yvonne Johnson Event Center, 1502 Barber Park Dr. Tickets to the event cost $35 per person/$280 per table of eight and may be purchased online at www.greensboro-nc.gov/HRTickets through Tuesday, April 7. Guests may purchase discounted tickets for $30 per person/$240 per table of eight before Sunday, March 15. The annual luncheon kicks off the department’s 2026 Housing Series, which provides neighborhood-based conversations, practical tools, and clear referral pathways to support residents and housing partners. Themed “Fair Housing Forward: Protecting Rights in Changing Times,” the luncheon program explores the complex challenges facing some residents and how early, coordinated support can reduce harm and protect rights. Participants will engage in interactive discussions focused on: • how housing instability and discrimination escalate under pressure • barriers that make harm harder to document or report • populations most vulnerable to discrimination in changing times • the importance of early outreach and referral • the role of wraparound, community-based support in fair housing prevention The Human Rights Department promotes mutual understanding, respect, and fair treatment of all Greensboro residents without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or familial status. Greensboro College Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Juliet Jordan Lowery, EdD, will address the City’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at its February 24 meeting. The 6 pm virtual program takes place on Zoom. The meeting ID is 821 0847 5528, and the public is welcome. Part of CSW’s ongoing LeadHERship Series, Lowery’s remarks are titled, “Thriving, Not Just Surviving: Women Rising Into LeadHERship.” Lowery has more than 20 years of experience in higher education leadership, student success, and inclusive excellence. She earned her doctorate in leadership for change from Fielding Graduate University and holds advanced degrees in education, as well as undergraduate studies in English language and literature from Bradley University and the University of Tulsa. Lowery has held leadership roles at a variety of institutions, including Virginia Western Community College, Roanoke College, and Wake Forest University, among others. Lowery serves on numerous boards and is known for her collaborative approach and commitment to justice and equity. She is recognized as a higher-education change agent and a sought-after thought partner on inclusive excellence in higher education.
