As affirmed by the Greensboro City Council, the Morningside Award is given annually to five graduates of James B. Dudley High School in memory of Cesar Cauce, Dr. Michael Nathan, William Evan Sampson, Sandra Neely Smith, and Dr. James Waller, who tragically lost their lives in the Greensboro Massacre of 1979. The awards commemorate the lives of those lost and their legacy of standing for justice and equality.

The $1,979 award will be granted at the completion of a K-12 education. Five Dudley graduates will receive the award based on their commitment to advance social justice and equality through:

  • Future academic goals - This Includes any post-secondary education path that addresses issues of discrimination, disparity, or inequity.
  • Future employment goals - This Includes any employment beyond high school graduation that contributes to the lives of others and works towards eliminating inequity and disparity.
  • Future entrepreneurial goals - This Includes any for- or non-profit business developed after graduating from high school that enhances the lives of marginalized populations.
