The Human Rights Internship Program is a collaborative effort between the City department and area colleges and universities. The program's goal is to empower and equip young professionals with the tools needed to build successful careers in local government or public service while fostering sustainable relationships with universities in our community.

“Many developing professionals have a desire to help, give back, and engage in government work. I hope students will come away from the Human Rights Department with a deeper understanding of the community’s needs and the skills necessary for work in the area of human rights.” ~ Love Jones, director

Our department is the City’s hub for all things human rights. Students interested in matters of social justice, including immigrant incorporation
and inclusion, fair and equitable housing, and community and economic development, will be
well-served in their placement with our department.

Hours and requirements are tailored to the intern’s desired learning outcomes. Interns gain valuable exposure to the inner workings of government and receive hands-on experience navigating the political culture and organizational environment that government embodies.

Human Rights staff provide mentoring in fields of interest and include interns in the facilitation of special projects and community events that provide professional development opportunities and add layers of experience.
