Duke Energy charges differently for electricity depending on the time of day and season for accounts on a “Time of Use” (TOU) tariff?
As of October 1, Duke Energy has entered the non-summer season for accounts on a Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity rate plan. This seasonal shift affects how energy costs are calculated throughout the day.

Non-Summer Season (October 1 – April 30)
  • Peak hours (most expensive): 6 - 9 am
  • Off-peak hours (least expensive): 1 - 3 am and 11 am to 4 pm
  • Weekends and the following holidays are also off-peak:
o   Thanksgiving Day
o   Day after Thanksgiving
o   Christmas Day
o   New Year’s Day
o   Good Friday
o   Memorial Day
During the non-summer season, electricity is most expensive in the morning, when demand is highest. In contrast, during the summer season (May 1 – September 30), peak hours shift to the evening (6 – 9 pm).
City departments with Time-of-Use accounts can help the City reduce energy costs by shifting operations and high-energy tasks to off-peak hours whenever possible. A Time-of-Use Peak Hours Chart is attached for reference.
If you have any questions about your TOU hours or rates, contact the City’s Office of Sustainability & Resilience Energy Manager Sergey Kobelev.
