• A&Y Greenway

  The northern most trestle bridge on the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway, located between Strawberry Road and Bur-Mil Park, is currently closed due to the findings and recommendations of an engineering firm that completed a structural assessment of the greenway’s two bridges spanning Lake Brandt in late September 2023. The structural assessment was part of a larger project to bring the section of greenway between Strawberry Road and Lake Brandt Road up to design standards. 

  The Greensboro Urban Metropolitan Planning Organization (GUAMPO) secured federal funding in the amount of $2 million which will be combined with a $500,000 local match. Design and permitting is underway and is anticipated to go under construction in fall 2026 with a completion date of fall 2027. The sensitive watershed habitat surrounding the bridge and greenway contribute to the complexity of this project.   

  No paved detour route is available. Pedestrians and bicyclists should choose an alternative trailhead south of the trestle bridge. The North Carolina Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) will be temporarily rerouted along the Piedmont Trail. The Weaver Bridge, located to the south of Bur-Mil Park, remains open.

• A&Y Greenway Extension

  Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, 2100 Fernwood Dr.

  The City will provide an update on the A&Y Greenway Extension project and share the project schedule. The greenway will provide a 12-foot-wide path from Hill Street to Rollins Road. In addition, various sidewalk connections to the greenway will be constructed, as well as the redesign of the Battleground Avenue/Benjamin Parkway/West Smith Street intersection.   This project will provide the extension of the Atlantic & Yadkin (A&Y) Greenway to be constructed on the abandoned railroad bed from Hill Street to Rollins Road.

  The project also includes improvements to the Battleground Avenue/Benjamin Parkway intersection, and construction of numerous sidewalk segments that will connect to the proposed greenway. This includes sidewalks along Battleground Avenue, Lawndale Drive, Mill Street, Fernwood Drive, Markland Drive, Rollins Road, Benjamin Parkway, and the RED Cinemas access drive.

  Construction is tentatively scheduled to start in the fall of 2027 with an estimated completion date of late 2029.

• Downtown Greenway

  The Downtown Greenway, a collaborative project of the City of Greensboro and Action Greensboro, is a planned 4-mile walking and biking trail. To date, 3 miles of the Downtown Greenway are open including sections along the north, east and south.  The final mile on the west side is planned to go under construction in 2023. • East Greensboro Greenway

  The proposed East Greensboro Greenway is a four- to five-mile corridor with two spurs in the City of Greensboro connecting the downtown with recreational and cultural destinations in East Greensboro. The western terminus of the main corridor is the J. Douglas Galyon Depot multi-modal transportation center with connection to the Greensboro Downtown Greenway, and the southeastern terminus is Barber Park. The two spurs will provide additional connectivity to Bennett College for Women and the Historic Magnolia House as well as the planned Windsor-Chavis-Nocho Community Complex. 

  The purpose of a feasibility study is to develop a vision for future bicycle and pedestrian connectivity in the study area, and identify opportunities, constraints, and recommendations for future implementation. It will develop and analyze conceptual routes and identify a preliminary preferred route. It will also provide cost estimates and an implementation plan for future trail construction. In 2024 and beyond, more detailed design and eventually construction will be completed as funding becomes available.

  The project is led by the City of Greensboro with the support of NCDOT and Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

• Friends Greenway

  Greensboro Parks and Recreation recently completed a feasibility study for a greenway connecting the Bicentennial Greenway to Woodbrook Drive at Friends Homes West. The one-mile greenway will be developed on City-owned drainageway and open space and connect to Woodbrook Drive along an easement dedicated by Friends Homes.  Two virtual engagement meetings were held on November 16, 2021.  Both meetings consisted of a pre-recorded presentation followed by panel discussion with Greensboro Parks and Recreation staff and representatives from McAdams Engineering, who completed the feasibility study.  A summary of questions and answers can be found here. 

  

• Keeley Park Adaptive Mountain Bike Trail

  In 2022, Greensboro Parks and Recreation received grant funds from VF Foundation for the construction of the City's first adaptive mountain bike (aMTB) trail.  This inclusive mountain bike trail will be designed to allow people with disabilities to access the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of mountain biking. This intentional design will open the sport to a population typically excluded from mountain biking by providing wider paths, stable surfaces, and other features to all members of our community and beyond.  The trail is currently under design and construction is anticipated to be complete in spring/summer 2023.

  The department is also pursuing grant funds to support the construction of a trailhead parking lot along Camp Burton Road that will provide additional accessible parking opportunities and accommodate specialized equipment.  Join us on Facebook Live Monday, October 10 at 6 pm and Wednesday, October 12 at 12 noon to learn more about this project.  The presentation and survey will also be posted to this site after the live presentation.  

   

• Nat Greene Trail Ext.

  Greensboro Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with the Piedmont Fat Tire Society, is making significant improvements to the Nat Greene Extension from the A&Y Greenway to Old Battleground Road. Upgrades use sustainable trail design standards and protect the fragile ecosystem around Lake Brandt. This trail is open to hikers and mountain bikers providing a much needed connection from the Bicentennial Greenway to the watershed trail system. The Palmetto Trail will remain for hiking only.

• North Buffalo Creek Greenway

  Phase I of the North Buffalo Creek Greenway at Revolution Mill was completed in 2018.  A connection to Church St. is currently under construction with anticipated completion in fall 2022. 

• Watershed Trail Expansion

  Greensboro Parks and Recreation is partnering with Piedmont Fat Tire Society and Greensboro Water Resources to construct additional mountain biking trail along Lake Townsend off Yanceyville Road.  This Recreation Trails Program funded project  includes Squirrel Creek and Flying Squirrel (1.3 miles) trails and the Burl Oak (1.2 miles) Trail.  These trails add to Greensboro's existing watershed trail network and are open to hikers as well as mountain bikers. Trailhead parking along Doggett road is under design.
