Cultural Dance and Fitness Classes

City Arts is proud to host classes in a variety of performing arts. Many combine cultural heritage with physical activity. To become a Teacher-in-Residence for one of these classes or to learn more about the program, call City Arts at 336-373-2549, e-mail us, or use the contact us link below.

African Dance Technique
Tuesdays: 7:30-9 pm, Studio 305
Have an awesome time learning West African dance technique to live drumming. All levels welcome. You can start at any time. "If you can walk, you can dance!" - African Proverb

Greensboro Kendo Club
Sundays: 1-3:30 pm, Studio 305
Kendo, the Japanese "way of the sword," is the modern descendant of Samurai swordsmanship. Using protective gear and non-lethal equipment, students engage in ritualized combat developed to enhance the body and spirit. Emphasis is on correct posture, technique, and attitude. Non-profit classes are taught by certified members of the All United States Kendo Federation. Kendo is not self-defense. Visit our website or e-mail for more information.

In these traditional Irish step dance classes, students will have the opportunity to perform, compete, make new friends, and have fun while being provided with the finest instruction of Irish dance. Classes are ongoing. Drop-in and join anytime! Nia is a free flowing fitness class that combines the energies of dance, martial arts, and healing arts. Using grounded steps and stances and uplifting music, the class delivers cardio benefits and balanced bodywork that is fun, creative and energizing. Nia is appropriate for a wide range of ages, personalities, and fitness levels. 
    Instructor - Cynthia Wolfe 
    $12 drop in per class; six classes for $10 each 

Bachata Dance ClassesTIR
Fridays: 6:30-8 pm, Studio 317
Always felt as if you having two left feet? Not anymore! Come and learn some bachata moves. It's not just a dance, it's a great way to socialize, make new friends, do something together with your significant other or meet someone who might become one. So come and dance with us! A partner is not required. No tennis shoes, shoes with rubber soles or flip-flops allowed. New sessions start the first Friday of each month.
Private Salsa lessons are available upon request.
    $10 per class depending on class level

Scottish Highland Dance Scottish Dance
Thursdays: 7-8 pm, Studio 317
Do you like Scotland or dancing or exercise and can hop on one foot? Scottish Highland Dancing is the individual dance of Scotland – no partner needed. Learn the Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Scottish Lilt, Reels, Hornpipe, Jig and others for your pleasure or competition. Open to all ages and experience levels.
    $10 per week; $8 per week for others in same family

TIRTai Chi
Mondays: 7-8:30 pm, Studio 305
Thursdays: 10-11:30 am, Studio 305
Relax your body, calm your mind, and let your natural love for life overflow! In our ongoing classes, you will learn and practice the beautiful and gentle Chinese art of Tai Chi. Join our certified instructors to improve your balance and posture, relieve stress, and see your overall level of energy increase. For more information visit the website.

TIR Yoga with Nancy
Thursdays: 6-7:30 pm, Ashtanga Primary Series, Studio 317
Saturdays: 9-10:30 am, Vinyasa Flow Yoga, Studio 317
Ashtanga yoga is a vigorous system of movement and breathing which improves alignment, flexibility, and strength. Vinyasa flow yoga is a constantly moving series of postures that builds core strength, stamina, and flexibility. Beginners are welcome to all classes. 
    Instructor - Nancy Thornton
    $10 per class or eight classes for $60
