Service Learning and Leadership Opportunities

GYC offers service learning opportunities through leadership roles as executive board member, project chair and project staff. These positions require more time and dedication than a GYC normal volunteer opportunity. All positions receive assistance from a GYC advisor to successfully run their area and you do not have to be a GYC member to hold a position, though membership is strongly encouraged.

We are considered a service learning provider through Guilford County Schools for those working toward a Service Learning Diploma or Certificate. Learn more about Guilford County School's Service Learning requirements. 

Fashion Show

Serve as the Chair, an Area Leader, or Area Assistant for the 2019 GYC Fashion Show and earn between 20-60 service learning hours!

The Fashion Show held, yearly in March, focuses on promoting a positive self and body image in teens as well as a issue teens are facing such as bullying. Learn more about the Fashion Show.  

Energetic and dedicated volunteers are needed to serve as staff for the event in the areas of show director and backstage/props director. Those serving as Fashion Show staff work with an adult advisor from December to March to learn about the event and specific duties related to planning and running the area. Check out the positions and brief descriptions below. 

Fashion Show Chair

  • The individual in this role oversees the entire show and manages the fashion show staff. Duties include:
    •  plan and run staff meetings
    • selecting the show theme and teen issue
    • working with backstage/props staff to create the items needed
    • booking the emcee for the show
    • assist with selecting models
    • attend all executive board and monthly meetings prior to and after the project

Area Leaders

  • Show Director- secures models for the show and coordinates model practice and develops the show schedule.
    • This position is great for someone who is great at motivating others and is organized. 
  • Backstage/Props Director-creates props or decorations for the show and ensures models meet cues during the show.
    • A great position for someone who it creative and able to multi-task well.

Area Assistants

  • Show Director Assistant- 
    • Assists the Show Director in managing the models by completing tasks such as tracking attendance and assisting with the show schedule 
  • Backstage/Props Assistants- 2 people are needed
    •  Help make props and ensure they are properly placed for each scene.

Camille's Closet and Theo's Threads

Earn between 20-60 service learning hours as a project chair, area leader, or area assistant!

Camille's Closet and Theo's Threads collects new and like new formal wear and accessories for young men and women to wear for special occasions. Items are collected through a four week drive. These items are given to the teens for free. Find out more about this project.

Volunteers are needed to serve as leaders of the project. Dedication is a must!

Camille's Closet and Theo's Threads Chair

  • The individual in this role oversees the entire event from collecting the formal wear and to the shopping days. Duties include:
    •  plan and run staff meetings
    • selecting decorations for the shopping days
    • finding new locations to serve a collection sites during the drive
    • sorting and organizing the formal wear
    • attend all executive board and monthly meetings prior to and after the project

Camille's Closet and Theo's Threads Assistant

 Assists the chair with planning the formal wear drive and running the shopping days.
