GYC offers service learning opportunities through leadership roles as executive board member, project chair and project staff. These positions require more time and dedication than a GYC normal volunteer opportunity. All positions receive assistance from a GYC advisor to successfully run their area and you do not have to be a GYC member to hold a position, though membership is strongly encouraged.

We are considered a service learning provider through Guilford County Schools for those working toward a Service Learning Diploma or Certificate. Learn more about Guilford County School's Service Learning requirements. 

2020-2021 Executive Board and Community Event Chairs

GYC is seeking teens to serve on the Executive Board or as Community Event Chairs (formerly known as Project Chairs) for the 2020-2021 term. Those interested should exhibit leadership skills and a desire to actively serve their community through GYC. Board positions are year-long terms, while Event Chair positions are 3-6 month terms.

All positions work with an adult advisor to help them understand job duties, complete tasks, and develop their skills. Apply now! Applications are due March 9.

Below are brief descriptions of the positions and grade level requirements.SW 2019

 

Executive Board Positions

  • Chair - Serves as the "face" of GYC, leads the board and council, and serves the GYC Office Manager. This is a paid position of the youth council. Those interested must complete the City of Greensboro application. Search GYC Office Manager.
    • Must be a rising junior or senior and an active member of GYC during the current school year with at least four months GYC experience. 
  • Internal Affairs Director (Vice Chair) - Keeps members and volunteers up to date, helps manage GYC social media pages, and plans the receptions.
    • Must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior.
  • Recruiting Director - Organizes the GYC Membership Drive with the help of a committee, plans and runs orientation, and supports all retention efforts of the organization.      
    • Must be a rising junior or senior and an active member of GYC with at least four months of GYC experience.
  • Records Director (Secretary) - Manages member information and hours, plans council socials, and takes photos at all GYC events.
    • Must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior.
  • Training Director - Plans and runs the GYC Institute Trainings/Workshops and leads icebreakers and energizers at GYC monthly meetings.
    • Must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior.

Community Event Chair Positions

Please note we are only seeking event chairs for fall 2020 community events. Applications for spring 2021 event chairs will be available in this fall.

Ghoulash 

  • What - Annual Halloween event held in downtown Greensboro providing family fun including games, bounce houses, costume contest, free candy and more! Visit the Ghoulash webpage to learn more.
  • When - Saturday, October 24
    • There are also dates for training and possible preparation days prior to the event.
  • Chair duties - Recruits as staff to assist in the planning and implementation of the event, oversees event including set and breakdown, evaluates the event once completed, and assists in securing any necessary partners or sponsorships.

Santa's Workshop

  • What - A community toy drive collecting new and like new toys to give to families in need during the holiday season, Visit the Santa's Workshop webpage to learn more.
  • When - Toy drive runs November 9 to December 7; Preparation/sorting and shopping days are December 11-14.
  • Chair duties - Work with an assistant to secure toy donation sites, secure sponsorships, and plan and run the preparation/sorting days.

Frequently asked questions regarding Executive Board and Community Event Chair applications

  • What happens after I submit my application?
    • You will receive an e-mail stating we received your application and it is being reviewed. Applications received after the deadline will not accepted or reviewed.
  • How does the selection process work?
    • Applications are reviewed by the GYC Chair and the adult advisors. Once all applications are reviewed, you will receive a call from GYC to schedule your interview. All Board and Event Chair applicants must participate in an interview. If you choose not to participate in an interview, your application will no longer be considered for the position in which you applied.

Spring in Bloom

spring vteerThis spring, GYC will participate in the Spring in Bloom event on Friday, April 3. This community event, hosted by Greensboro Downtown Parks Inc., celebrates the change of season and the  lighting of the LeBauer Park sculpture. GYC will provide games and crafts, organize an scavenger hunt, and sell glow items. 

Dedicated and enthusiastic teens are needed to help plan and run these areas. Below are the positions with a brief description. All positions work with an adult adviser to help them with their duties. 

Area Leaders- Lead and manage Area Assistants and volunteers to successfully run stations for the event.

  • Activities Manager - Plans the activities and procedures for the event which include games, arts-n-crafts, selling items, and the scavenger hunt.
  • Scavenger Hunt Coordinator - Organizes the art scavenger hunt creating clues and securing prizes for participants.
  • Business Manager - Selects items to sell and manages the business office and their assistants.

Area Assistants - Work along side Area Leaders to run designated areas.

  • Activities Assistant - Helps create games and procedures, decide on crafts, and make posters to promote activity stations.
  • Scavenger Hunt Assistant - Assists with creating clues and mapping out the hunt.
  • Business Assistants - Learns business procedures and helps run the business office.
