The Greensboro Police Department is comprised of 651 sworn law enforcement officers and 126 non-sworn employees. The department is made up of five major components: Office of the Chief of Police, Investigative Bureau, Management Bureau, Patrol Bureau, and Support Bureau. The department's 787 authorized personnel are assigned within 14 separate divisions. A full range of law enforcement services is provided through the various components of the Police Department. The department is led by Chief John Thompson. The GPD organizational structure is summarized below.
Office of the Chief of Police: Chief of Police, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chiefs, Public Information Manager, Public Information Coordinator, Police Attorneys, Paralegal, Public Safety Research Scientist, and Professional Standards.
Management Bureau: Fiscal Management, Resource Management, Research and Planning, Background Investigators, Recruitment, Public Safety Training Division, Logistics, CALEA, Public Safety IT, Office of Community Engagement, Secondary Employment, and Security Specialist.
Patrol Bureau: Police Districts 1, 2, 3, and 4; Watch Command, Patrol Supervisors and Officers, Community Resource Officers
Support Bureau: Police Records, Watch Operations, Telephone Response Unit, Electronic Monitoring, Court Liaisons, Crime Analysis, School Resource Officers, Police Neighborhood Resource Officers, Behavioral Health Response Team, Taxi Coordinator, Jail Intake Officers, Greensboro Motor Assistance Program (GMAP), Special Response Team, Hazardous Devices Team, Hostage Negotiations Team, All-Terrain Vehicles Team, Special Events Team, Traffic Safety Units, Canine Officers, Operational Planning, Mobile Command Post, and Real Time Information Center.
Investigative Bureau: Criminal Investigations (Homicide, Crimes Against Persons, Robbery, Property, Family Victims Unit, Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, Fraud Squads, Vice Narcotics, and Crime Stoppers), Investigative Support (Criminal Intelligence, Violent Crime Response Team, Organized Crime/Threat Assessment Unit, Crime Gun Intelligence Center, and Forensic Services (Crime Scene Investigations, Firearms and Tool Marks Section, Latent Print Section, and Property and Evidence Section)
