The Chief of Police directs and is responsible for the control of all police department operations in accordance with ordinances, policies and regulations established by the City of Greensboro and the City Manager. The Chief of Police reports to the Assistant City Manager for Public Safety. The Chief of Police directly supervises four Deputy Chiefs of Police, Executive Officer to the Chief of Police, Public Information Office, and the Professional Standards Division.

Chief Kamran Afzal was sworn in on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

Strategic Plan

The Greensboro Police Department’s Strategic Plan provides direction and focus for our organization. It is the roadmap that outlines where the agency is headed while capturing our success along the way. This plan will be reviewed and updated annually. While moving forward, the employees of the Greensboro Police Department will remain committed to building relationships and making Greensboro safe for all people.

Police Attorneys 

The Greensboro Police Department's two attorneys provide legal assistance and counsel to the Chief of Police in the formulation of policies, procedures, administration of discipline, and the department's daily operation. The attorneys provide training and legal updates to employees.  They also represent GPD in court.

Executive Officer to the Chief of Police

The Executive Officer to the Chief of Police prepares special reports and handles administrative concerns as directed by the Chief of Police. The Executive Officer provides direct assistance to the Chief of Police in the overall administration of the department’s operation, develops work plans for the department, and directs and controls the operational and administrative activities of all personnel under his/her command. The Executive Officer formulates and executes command decisions relative to special and routine police problems within his/her scope of authority.

Professional Standards Division 

The Professional Standards Division (PSD) performs administrative investigations within the department and provides internal control to help the department establish and maintain community trust.

PSD investigates complaints against police personnel and conducts other administrative investigations at the direction of the Chief of Police.

Division personnel also carry out policies that ensure residents' complaints are thoroughly investigated while treating department personnel consistently and fairly. Information from these investigations is provided to an accused employee's chain of command for adjudication and final results of the investigations are reported to the Chief of Police.

Public Information Office

The Public Information Office is responsible for establishing positive and productive relationships with the public and news media outlets. This office is responsible for releasing information to the public as directed by the Chief of Police. This office is also responsible for developing and implementing programs that serve to publicize the positive aspects of the Police Department’s efforts in serving the public interest. 

The Public Information Manager (PIM) is responsible for developing, managing, and coordinating the department’s media strategy and public relations.

Annette Ayres serves as the Public Information Manager. 

The Public Information Coordinator (PIC) oversees all social media strategy for the department and assists with media inquiries. This includes issuing press releases and public information about major incidents.
