National Night Out (NNO) takes place the first Tuesday in August. This unique crime and drug prevention event is sponsored locally by the Greensboro Police Department. Greensboro was one of 26 cities nationwide with a population of between 100,000 – 299,999 to be recognized nationally for its support of NNO. The department has received 22 national awards from the National Association of Town Watch based on community participation. More than 100 neighborhoods participate in this crime prevention event. This accomplishment would not be possible without the support of concerned residents.National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, neighborhoods in Greensboro will celebrate NNO in a variety of events and activities such as: block parties, cookouts, visits from local police and fire departments, parades, flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs. NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive, and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our quest for safer communities and a safer nation.
