The Fight for Equity started on a bus...
February 4 marks the observance of National Transit Equity Day. Greensboro Transit Agency along with public transportation providers across the country celebrate the birth of Mrs. Rosa L. Parks, a Montgomery, Alabama seamstress who earned a much-needed spotlight on inequity in public transit. Her refusal to give up her seat on Cleveland Avenue bus no. 2857 and subsequent arrest for "overlooking bus segregation" became a catalyst for the modern Civil Rights Movement. While the passing of laws such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 have positively affected the equitable provision of transit services, challenges still remain and the work continues. We are honored that Governor Josh Stein has proclaimed February 4, 2026, as Transit Equity Day in the state of North Carolina.
Riders of GTA and Access GSO on Wednesday, Feb. 4 will find a single reserved seat on each bus in honor of the legacy of Rosa Parks, winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Congressional Gold Medal and Spingarn Medal among other recognitions. In the spirit of equity, riders from all races and socio-economic backgrounds will also receive free fares for the entire day. New Transit Equity Day commemorative cards featuring a new image for 2026 will be available from bus operators and at the Depot Transportation Center as a reminder of how a small action can change the world.
