What's going on?
Public health officials – including the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and our local health departments – are closely monitoring an outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus termed “COVID-19”, or Coronavirus. It is a new virus that has not been previously identified by public health officials.
What are the signs of Coronavirus
Symptoms of Coronavirus can include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure. If you experience symptoms, do not wait to visit your doctor and follow their instructions.
How Can You Protect Yourself and Your Family?
There is currently no vaccine to prevent Coronavirus infection. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, the CDC recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses like COVID-19, as well as influenza and the common cold, including:
- Wearing a mask whenever out in public.
- Washing your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
- Coughing and sneezing into your elbow, not your hand. Alternatively, coughing or sneezing into a tissue, then throwing the tissue in the trash, and washing your hands.
What is GTA doing to combat the threat?
Administration and Operations Staff are following developments closely from local health departments and the CDC. Also, the American Public Transportation Association is focused on identifying steps transit systems like GTA can take to minimize risk of illness on public transportation. In addition to our nightly servicing of buses, cleaning staff is wiping down handrails and other surfaces with commercial disinfectants and spraying buses between trips at the Depot. All GTA and SCAT buses are outfitted with hand sanitizer dispensers for use by riders and operators. We continue to educate our riders to ensure necessary precautions are taken.
