In addition, the Division serves as the staff for the Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The MPO is the official body responsible for administering the transportation planning process required under federal law.
Whether working as representatives of the City, or as representatives of the larger MPO area, the Planning Division staff duties include planning for area thoroughfare and collector street connections and rights-of-way; sidewalk and bicycle planning and safety programs; supporting the City's Connections 2025 comprehensive plan process and Guilford County comprehensive planning efforts; supporting regional planning initiatives, including the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART), regional transportation studies, and regional travel demand model development and application; and supporting efforts of the GDOT Public Transportation and Engineering Divisions, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
