Guilford Creek Week is a great opportunity to support our community and have fun while learning about environmental awareness.

To cultivate a community-wide appreciation for local waterways, the City’s Library, Office of Sustainability and Resilience, Parks and Recreation, Solid Waste and Recycling, and Water Resources departments will dive into these free environmental sessions. Check them out!

June 21-Rehobeth Wetland Program & Cleanup

Free. For ages 10+ with parent supervision.

June 21, 9 am - 12 pm, Rehobeth Church Rd. (Additional information provided after registration)

»» The Rehobeth Wetland is approximately 36 acres of land, including the stream channel and the adjacent floodplain of the South Buffalo Creek, and a developed in-stream wetland pollution control facility. Join the City of Greensboro’s Stormwater Superintendent, Ray Johnson, as he takes a deep dive into the project created by developing a riparian wetland in the bottomlands of the stream and vegetated riparian buffers along the banks of the creek.

The talk will be followed by a Wetland Cleanup where you can explore the area and see the effectiveness of the wetland. All supplies will be provided.

*Closed toed shoes and long pants are required, boots or galoshes are encouraged! Bring a hat, sunscreen, bug spray and, water if needed.

June 23-Where Does Your Recycling Go? – Recycling Center Tour

June 23-Greensboro Arboretum Stream Restoration Walk and Talk

Free. For ages 10+ with parent supervision.

June 23, 6-7 pm, North Buffalo Creek Greensboro, NC (Details provided after registration)

»» The Greensboro Arboretum is a 17-acre site that features 14 plant collections, special display gardens and distinct structural features, including a section of North Buffalo Creek that was recently restored in partnership with the Water Resources and Parks and Recreation Departments. Join City of Greensboro stormwater staff member Blake Strumbel as he strolls through the project's history, primary design components, and its impacts. We will walk the key features of the project totaling just over ¾ of a mile.

*Closed toed shoes are encouraged! Bring a reusable water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and bug spray if needed.

June 23-Downtown Greenway Drain Marker Event

»» Want to help our aquatic ecosystems? Join Water Resources to help adhere drain markers to storm drains along the southern section of the Downtown Greenway. Markers serve as a reminder that “only rain should go down the drain” as storm drains in the City of Greensboro lead to our lakes and streams. All supplies will be provided.

*Close-toed shoes and pants are required. If necessary, bring a reusable water bottle, hat, and sunscreen.

June 24-Recycled Art

June 24-Revolution Mill Stream Restoration Walk and Talk

Free. For all ages parent supervision.

»» Join us for an evening at Revolution Mill. The evening starts with a talk about the history of the site and urban streams, followed by a visit to the recently completed stream restoration project to see its benefit to the community. Dr. Sarah Praskievicz from UNC Greensboro, and Haley Bock and Alex Ashton from the Piedmont Conservation Council, will share insights into the project's stream restoration components. This site includes portions of the North Buffalo Greenway.

»» Grab a personal floatation device and a kayak top help clean up Lake Townsend!

*Bags, gloves, and grabbers will be provided. A limited number of kayaks are available, so register now or bring your own. Greensboro City Lakes has agreed to waive the rental fees due to the cleanup. You may also clean along the banks of the lake.

June 26-Water Treatment Plant Tour

Free. For ages 10+ with parent supervision.

June 26, 1-3 pm, Mitchell Water Treatment, Greensboro, NC (Details provided after registration)

»» Greensboro depends upon three surface water sources to supply our water: Lake Townsend, Lake Brandt, and Lake Higgins. These lakes are located within a protected watershed in northern Guilford County in the upper Cape Fear River Basin. When full, Greensboro’s reservoirs hold about eight billion gallons of water.

Drinking water from Lake Brandt is treated at the Mitchell Water Treatment Plant, and water from Lake Townsend is treated at the Townsend Water Treatment Plant. From there, the water is tested and pumped into the distribution system. On average, both plants treat and deliver about 34.7 million gallons daily to nearly 321,000 customers. June 26-Downtown Greenway Clean-a-Creek

»» Join the Downtown Greenway to help Clean-A-Creek! This community cleanup is a wonderful opportunity for all ages to contribute to the health of our urban ecosystem by removing debris and litter from our local waterways. Gloves, bags, and other clean-up supplies will be provided.

June 28-Trash Trap Clean-Out!

»» Join us in making a difference by volunteering at one of our Greensboro Trash Traps! These stormwater litter traps are specially designed to catch trash before it flows into our main waterways — and we need your help to keep them clean and collect valuable data.

Volunteers will help remove debris and log information on the types and amounts of trash collected — crucial data for improving local water quality!

All Week Long-Green Girls

Free drop-off program for middle school age girls.

Join Parks and Recreation and Water Resources, Guilford County's Planning and Development for environmental science-based learning that engages middle school girls. During Guilford Creek Week, we will offer one programs throughout Greensboro City’s parks and waterways, encouraging girls to realize their potential to create change within the natural environment. Through hands-on activities and the stimulating concepts of virtual field exploration, technology, advocacy, and project-based science, Green Girls develop an understanding of natural ecosystems in Greensboro’s parks, learn about future careers in the sciences, and understand their own power to advocate for the environment and their parks.
